South Florida is full of hidden gems, but few experiences combine wildlife, kayaking, and tropical scenery quite like a trip to Raccoon Island. Recently, I joined a tour with SoFlo Water Adventures, and it turned out to be one of the most unique outdoor adventures I’ve had in South Florida.
The adventure began at Bill Bird Marina in North Miami.
The staff was extremely inviting, friendly and explained everything in detail about the adventure that was waiting for us. We then proceeded on a short 10 minute ride to another vessel being sure to look out for dolphins and other sea life along the way.
Starting the Journey
Once we reached the anchored vessel, we climbed aboard and prepared for the next part of the journey—kayaking.

Exploring the Mangroves
After a quick introduction and safety briefing, we launched our kayaks. It was a little cloudy but still beautiful. The route took us through winding mangrove tunnels that felt like something straight out of a nature documentary.
Paddling through the mangroves was so peaceful and immersive. The dense roots and twisting waterways created a maze-like environment that showcased a completely different side of Miami than most visitors ever see.

The quiet of the mangroves was a refreshing contrast to the busy city just a few miles away. The mangroves were also very different than the ones we were used to kayaking through. It was quite a beautiful scene.
Arriving at Raccoon Island
As the mangroves opened up, our destination finally came into view: Raccoon Island.
The small island is famous for its resident raccoons, which have become accustomed to human visitors over the years. As soon as we landed, several curious raccoons peeked through the brush. One literally came up to my kayak, but I couldn’t get the camera out in time for a close up shot.

Seeing so many raccoons in their natural island habitat was unlike anything I had experienced before. They wandered around the beach, explored the shoreline, and seemed surprisingly comfortable around people. Their playful personalities quickly became the highlight of the trip, and everyone of course had their cameras out.

Wildlife and Natural Beauty
While the raccoons steal the spotlight, the island itself is beautiful. Surrounded by crystal-clear water and tropical scenery, it feels like a secluded escape hidden in plain sight. There were also beautiful baynon trees as we explored the island.
The combination of kayaking, wildlife encounters, and stunning scenery made the experience feel like multiple adventures rolled into one.
Why I’d Recommend It
What I loved most about the SoFlo Water adventure was the variety. It wasn’t just a boat ride. It wasn’t just kayaking. It wasn’t just wildlife viewing. It combined all three into a memorable half-day adventure.
Whether you’re a local looking for something different or a visitor wanting to experience a side of Miami beyond the beaches and nightlife, this tour offers a unique perspective on South Florida’s natural beauty.
By the time we paddled back through the mangroves and boarded the boat for the return trip, I felt like I had discovered a secret corner of Miami that many people never get to see.
If you’re looking for an unforgettable outdoor experience, kayaking to Raccoon Island with SoFlo Water Adventures is definitely worth adding to your South Florida bucket list. Grab your tickets here.
